Overview
A trip to the Andaman Islands is incomplete without visiting the Cellular Jail, a silent sentinel that stands in tribute to India’s fierce struggle for independence. Also known as Kala Pani, this colonial-era prison in Port Blair is a symbol of the resilience, courage, and sacrifice of countless freedom fighters who endured unimaginable suffering within its walls
A Journey Through History
Constructed by the British between 1896 and 1906, the Cellular Jail was designed as a high security prison to exile political prisoners far from the Indian mainland. With its distinctive seven-wing structure (now only three remain), the jail was built to isolate inmates in solitary confinement, preventing any form of communication or unity among them a cruel tactic to suppress rebellion.
The prison once housed prominent revolutionaries like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Barindra Kumar Ghosh, among many others. Their stories echo through the narrow corridors and stark cells, turning this site into a place of deep national pride and remembrance.
What to Expect
- Museum Galleries: The jail now functions as a national memorial. Inside, you’ll find galleries showcasing photographs, letters, and original artifacts belonging to prisoners. These exhibits provide a haunting yet inspiring glimpse into India’s freedom struggle.
- Veer Savarkar’s Cell: One of the most visited spots, this cell belonged to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a prominent freedom fighter and thinker. His writings and ideology continue to influence generations.
- Light & Sound Show: Held every evening in both English and Hindi, the Light and Sound Show is a must-attend experience. Narrated in the voice of the ‘old Peepal tree’ that has stood witness to history, the show brings alive the stories of prisoners and their enduring spirit.
- Watch Tower Views: Climb up to the central watch tower to soak in panoramic views of Port Blair and the surrounding sea. It’s a solemn reminder of isolation, yet offers a moment of reflection and beauty.
