Overview

The 1943 Flag Point in Port Blair is not just a viewpoint it’s a symbol of India’s first tryst with freedom. This lesser-known but profoundly significant site marks the historic moment when Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian national flag for the first time on Indian soil, long before independence was officially declared in 1947.

Overlooking the serene waters of the Andaman Sea, the flag point is both a patriotic landmark and a peaceful spot to reflect, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs, students, and proud Indians alike.

The Historical Significance

On 30th December 1943, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the leader of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army), unfurled the Tricolor at this very location, declaring the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as the first Indian territory to be liberated from British rule. This act was a powerful statement of defiance and self-rule under the Provisional Government of Free India, which Netaji had established with the support of Imperial Japan during World War II.

The site today honors that first symbolic step toward independence, and the flame of Netaji’s patriotism still burns bright here.

What You’ll Find at the 1943 Flag Point
